Why Would I need Endodontic Retreatment?
Endodontic retreatment is a dental procedure that's sometimes necessary when a previous root canal treatment hasn't been successful or has developed new problems.
1. Purpose: The goal is to save your tooth by removing any remaining infection and protecting it from future infection.
2. Why it's needed: This might be necessary if you're experiencing pain, swelling, or if an X-ray shows signs of infection in a tooth that's had a root canal before.
3. The procedure:
- First, we'll reopen your tooth to access the root canal filling material.
- We'll remove the old filling material and clean the canals thoroughly, including the use of advanced cleaning systems.
- We'll carefully examine the inside of your tooth for any additional canals, fractures, or unusual anatomy that might have been missed before.
- Then, we'll clean and shape the canals again.
- Finally, we'll refill and seal the canals with new material.
4. After the procedure: You might need a new crown or other restoration to protect the tooth.
5. Recovery: You might experience some discomfort for a few days after the procedure, but this can usually be managed with Advil (Ibuprofen) and/or Tylenol (Acetaminophen).
